
Euthanasia Unit
- UNO developed the euthanasia unit based on the present views on euthanasia
in rats and mice.
- As described in the articles published in the Laboratory Animal (1995
- volume 29) and Laboratory
- Animal Science (August 97 , volume 47 number 4), euthanasia through
a mixure of O2 and CO2
- is prefered over euthanasia through CO2 only. This conclusion is based
on behaviour studies,
- EEG and ECG performed during the euthanasia in rats.
- (Articles on request available!) The UNO Euthanasia Unit uses PLC
pre-set programs.
- The main advantage hereoff is that the procedures for euthanasia can
be easily described
- in a protocol for the users of the unit. (The PLC controlled
programs can be altered by UNO).

The UNO Euthanasia unit consists of:
- A polycarbonate box with lid, in which the mouse and rat cages
can be placed.
- Dimensions: 50 x 75 x 25cm (L xWxH)
- (other dimensions custom made available!)
- Tube for the gassupply. This tube can be inserted into the cage by
putting
- it through the bars of the wire lid.
- A valve in the polycarbonate box to connect the unit to an exhaust
system.
- (Optional for laughing-gas).
- The s.s. trolley has a tray on which the gas cylinders can be placed.
- A switchboard for the supply of the gas (mixure) O2 and CO2, according
- a PLC pre-set program. (Optionally we can also enclude a program for
the
- supply of laughing-gas (N2O).
The switchboard contains:
- * 1 red button: to switch the unit
ON and OFF.
- * 3 green buttons positioned vertically:
each button activates a PLC pre-set program:
- - 1) 1 minute O2 and 4 minutes CO2 (euthanasia)
- - 2) 1 minute O2 and 1 minute CO2 (short intoxication) optional
- -3) 1 minute laughing-gas
- (A special laughing gas absorber for the gas-exhaust is required.)
- * 3 green buttons positioned horizontally.
