- Studies have shown .......
- That rounded catheter tips are less thrombogenic than "square-cut" and
- "beveled" catheter tips.
- The rounded tip is less traumatic to the intimal lining of blood vessels,
- and is thus slower to evoke a thrombogenic response ..........
- during implantation and in situ.
- The superiority of the rounded tip was first described by Dr. Melvin B. Dennis Jr. D.V.M.
- for large animals and was later proven
- to be true in rats by Dr. Laura O'Farrel D.V.M.

ROUND MOLDED TIP

Research presented at the 1994 AALAS Meeting by Dr. Laura O'Farrel (then at Hershey Medical Center) concluded that in rats, rounded tip silicone catheters are superior to square cut and bevel cut silicone catheters. "Necropsy findings revealed that fistula with sharp (square cut) intravascular tips traumatized the vessel endothelium producing thrombosis in 7 out of 10 cases. This compared with only 1 case of thrombosis in the 31 rounded this catheters." " ... comparison of sharp (square tip) and rounded tip catheters revealed the superiority of the latter." Dennis M., Cole J., Jensen W., Scibner B. " Long-term blood access by catheters implanted into arteriovascular fistulas of sheep." Laboratory Animal Science, 34(4), 388-92,1984. "... some tubings had been cut with a scalpel and ... the cut edge might have abraded the endothelium and induced thrombus formation...". Hecker J. "Thrombogenicity of tips of umbilical catheters." Pediatrics, 67(4), 467-71, 1981. |
